Description
Theopisti Stylianou, a Cypriot photographer and photography lecturer, attempts to explore the lived experience of travel photographers by photographing them while they use their cameras at various tourist destinations (Prague, Athens, Cairo, New York, St. Louis, Ravenna and Pafos).
Influenced by anthropological and sociological photography, Stylianou is observing the mass behaviors of tourists – what they choose to photograph, their body positions, how they represent themselves and their loved ones, etc. At Charles Bridge, the Parthenon or the Pyramids, tourists seem to behave in the same way: they point and shoot, adopt unnaturally stiff poses or uncomfortable positions in order to capture the desired image, while their cameras, small or big, are held at a distance in order to preview reality or become an extension of their eyes. Interestingly, in their faces we find evidence of pleasure, excitement and awe along with fatigue, annoyance or anxiety.
The exhibition includes 21 photographs and 2 installations. The book «Tourists Who Shoot» will be presented during the inauguration of the exhibition.
Opening: February 13th at 19:30.
