Description

This strange, surrealistic feature — punningly titled, in English, Hi! Am Erica! — begins on September 1, 1939, the first day of World War II, and ends in the New Mexico desert on July 16, 1945, with the first-ever explosion of an atomic bomb. The film charts, along the way, the social and sexual awakening of Petros, an 18-year-old who takes flight from the port city of Limassol, Cyprus, aboard a boat named The Stranger. Petros’s journey will take him to Pireas in Greece, Buenos Aires in Argentina, and New Orleans in America. His mentor along the way will be the older Jimmy, an African-American sailor. His heart will be stolen by Maria-Erica, a young Argentine woman with a questionable past. In each port, Petros will discover a rich musical tradition — rebitiko in Greece, tango in Argentina, and the blues in New Orleans — which nurtures the soul and sustains poor and migrant communities.
