Description
The internationally acclaimed artist John Christoforou is presenting his first solo exhibition in Cyprus at Nicosia’s Alpha Gallery. The exhibition opens on 2 March and will continue through 12 March.
John Christoforou was born in 1921 in London to Greek parents from Smyrna. At age nine he returned with his father to live in Athens. In 1935 he entered the Athens Academy of Fine Arts. Several years later he returned to London and after World War II devoted his time to painting, eventually earning his first solo exhibition in 1949 at the Twenty Brooke Street Gallery in London. Over the course of the next sixty-two years he presented his work in over fifty solo exhibitions and participated in more than one hundred group exhibitions throughout the world.
John Christoforou is recognized as an important pioneer of the Nouvelle Figuration (New Figuration) movement that emerged in the early 1960’s. Along with Francis Bacon and Willem de Kooning, he was leading influence in this important transitional movement between the abstract art of the 1950's and the figuration appearing in the early 1960's.
His works are found in over thirty museums and important public collections in London, Paris, Athens, Vienna, Copenhagen, Bogota, and Seoul.
Fourteen works are featured in this exhibition spanning a fifty-year period and representative of the artist’s career. An exhibition catalogue featuring the works and commentary by the artist on his work is available.
