Description

The artist Jürgen Böttcher experienced the fall of the Berlin Wall and made the documentary film "The Wall". Thirty years later, the Goethe-Institut remembers this historic event with a screening of the film "The Wall" on Monday 21st October 2019 at 8p.m., followed by a discussion.

When the spokesperson for the Politburo announces freedom to travel for all GDR citizens on 9 September 1989, he unknowingly rings in the last chapter of Germany's division. On that same evening, Germans from the East and West embrace each other jubilantly.

The artist and director, Jürgen Böttcher, processes his own personal impressions of the last days of the Berlin Wall in his documentary "The Wall" (1990, 99 minutes, Germany). This is a vivid film, partly experimental, about the Berlin Wall at the centre of town around Potsdamer Platz and the Brandenburg Gate. A film about its final days in which the dismantling pervades our senses. The graphic images and collage-like sound mix appeal to our associative powers. Faces and scenes at the moment of the event are strictly complemented by projections of historical sequences onto the remains of this inhuman structure.

Following the screening, the journalist Tasos Telloglou from Athens will report his personal experiences of the German Democratic Republic and the fall of the Berlin Wall in discussion with Rena Choplarou and Armağan Candan.

The event is organized within the framework of the Weeks of the German Language.
