The self-destructive and needy wealthy teenager Harold is obsessed with death and spends his leisure time attending funerals and watching buildings being demolished. When Harold meets eighty-year-old Maude at a funeral, his life changes dramatically. A strong friendship is born between the desperate teenager and the spirited old lady, who reveals to the young man the innumerable prospects and colours that his own life may take. Maude succeeds in transmitting confidence and faith in a young person who seems unable to adapt to his surroundings.
