Description

Etecoles refuses to pass the throne of Thebes to his brother, and so Polynikis allies with Argos and King Adrastos and fights his brother. The Thebes won but they refused to hand over the dead to Adrastos. The King of Argos goes to Athens to seek help from the city, along with the mothers of the seven generals, who please Theseus’ mother, Aethra for help.

The Suppliants was staged in Cyprus four years after 1974, then travelled to Athens in 1979, Epidaurus in 1980 and was repeated in 1984 and 1994. It was the first ever professional production of an ancient Greek tragedy directed by a Cypriot director, Nicos Charalambous. Charalambous with Kolotas (translator), Christodoulides (musician) and Ziakas (set designet) and of course the ‘dream team’ of Cyprus theatre staged this anti-war political tragedy.

To honor their extraordinary performance and the director, theatre Group TECHNON Theatre presents the reading of the play in a new translation (in Greek).
