Description
Lecture by Dr Monica Asimenou, art historian.
The work is sited in space, called upon to be seen. Siting is achieved by virtue of the situation for which it is intended: the exhibition. Based on the exhibition “Rooms to Contemplate: Content and Perspective of a Collection”, hosted at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, the lecture looks at the concept of sight, site and the relation created between them. The viewer is faced with artworks sited in a specific manner; likewise, the eye is moved to interpret the work by virtue of its morphoplastic situation. The ensuing dialectics of solid-vacuum, inside-out, matter-immaterial rests upon this communication between sight-site-artwork. When ridding the artwork of the truth it negotiates, of its spiritual element, namely what makes it a work of art standing apart from other items, the only things that remain are matter and form. Is this ridding a potential approach of the artwork on the basis of its understanding and analysis?
The lecture is placed in the framework of actions parallel to the Foundation’s “Rooms to Contemplate: Content and Perspective of a Collection” visual art exhibition.
