Description
Beethoven wrote his Coriolan overture inspired by H. J. von Collin's tragedy Coriolan. The explosive and resolute character of the music strongly represents the rage and revengeful intentions of Coriolanus against Rome. Premiered as late as 1937 and championed by Yehudi Menuhin, Schumann’s marvelous Violin concerto (1853) finally enjoys a well-deserved place among the great violin concerti. Written for the famous young virtuoso Joseph Joachim, it ranges in mood from stormy to languorous and whimsical. Beethoven’s masterful 7th Symphony, considered by the composer as “one of his best works”, was premiered in 1813 in Vienna for the benefit of soldiers wounded at the battle of Hanau against Napoleon.
