Description

'Mix 60 parts sand, 180 parts ashes from sea plants and 5 parts chalk, put them in the kiln, and you will have crystal.' - Cuneiform script of Mesopotamia.

The motive for the series of crystals was the work of biologist Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) titled 'Art forms in Nature', a collection of ornate illustrations of organisms he observed with the use of microscope. In these illustrations, organisms spread kaleidoscopically across the page, revealing their structure. Through them, Haeckel's worldview is made evident : all increasingly complicated structures and patterns germinate from the original cells. Τhey are a kind of 'organic crystallography'.

This work is a series of studies of crystals. It is composed of drawings merged with glass structures. The drawings are detailed depictions of unrefined crystals from high resolution images. They are then integrated in box-like glass structures, made by appropriating Tiffany glass art technique. Their geometric shape acts as a reference to the symmetric internal structure of the crystal and having similar composition to it, they are a sort of extension in space.

Maria Kofterou is a visual artist born n 1986, in Nicosia, Cyprus. She studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Art (2004-2009) and the Slade School of Fine Art (UCL) as part of the Erasmus program. In 2010 she opens Art & Design studio ' Aimtheforest ' in Nicosia, where she still works as an illustrator and visual artist. Her work was showcased in publications and group exhibitions. Since 2012 she has been studying Philosophy at the University of Cyprus.
