Description

The University of Cyprus invites the public to attend at the 3rd annual lecture in memory of George Paraskevaides. The lecture will take place on Monday, 1 December 2014 at 18:30 at the Auditorium Hall of the University of Cyprus (Kallipoleos 75). The lecture, organized in annual basis honors the memory of George Paraskevaides, a renowned persona of Cyprus, a distinguished businessman and a philanthropist. The 3rd Annual Lecture in Memory of George Paraskevaides has been established as one of the top architectural happenings taking place annually in Cyprus, hosting talented and eminent architects all over the world.

The speaker of the 3rd Annual Lecture in Memory of George Paraskevaides entitled «Making Connections: design across scales, disciplines, cultures» is Ms Andrea Paola Leers, principal and co-founder with Jane Weinzapfel of Leers Weinzapfel Associates, a Boston based practice. Andrea is an internationally recognized leader in urban and campus design, and building for civic institutions and this is her first visit and lecture in Cyprus.

The lecture will focus on the dramatically alteration of the nature of practice today due to the urbanization, the revolution in digital technology, and the awareness that we are overusing our one planet’s resources. People today work simultaneously at multiple scales, from the carefully crafted object to extended territories• they are weaving together the thinking of previously separate disciplines to create ensembles of building, landscape, and infrastructure• working across cultures to find connections and distinctions between the urban and social contexts of Boston, Paris, Tokyo, and Taiwan. In a series of studios over ten years at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, these themes have been the subject of student research and investigation, providing a reciprocal relationship with our practice. Today, Ms Leers notices that though our tools have dramatically changed, the fundamental concerns remain the same: making connections between people and place, between history and the future, between the conceptual and the tectonic.

Professor Constantinos Christofides, Rector of the University of Cyprus and Mr Efthivoulos Paraskevaides on behalf of the family of George Paraskevaides will address the 3rd Annual Lecture in Memory of George Paraskevaides. Mr Andreas Savvides, Assistant Professor at the Department of Architecture at the University of Cyprus will introduce the speaker.

The lecture is open to the public.

There will be simultaneous translation from Greek to English and vice versa.
